Hickory Trees

Two part question but both involve Shag Bark Hickory Trees: 1) I have an older Hickory Tree that has lost 2 sizable limbs almost directly across from each other. This has left holes in the tree trunk that I feel need patched. What is the proper material and or method to close these holes?

2) I have another gorgeous Tree that landed right in the middle of a driveway that I want to pour in concrete. Is it possible to block out for the tree and expect it or the concrete to survive?

Jack,

Unfortunately, I cannot provide you with a legitimate answer to your question via this electronic venue. Your questions require on-site evaluation. What I can tell you is that plugging the holes (foam, concrete, etc.) is generally NOT recommended - cause more harm than good. I would seriously question anyone who recommends such treatment. Generally, we do nothing for such "holes", and allow the tree to compartmentalize the wound naturally.

Yes, pouring concrete around the base of a tree is going to cause problems. However, an on-site evaluation would be needed for comments and suggestions :-)

Therefore, you will need to contact a professional tree care specialist (e.g., certified arborist). Your local yellow pages should contain a list of certified arborists.

40 year old Hickory Tree losing it's leaves and the leaves left on the tree are brown and dead. Is there a disease that affects a Hickory Tree like this and is there a possibility this tree will come back? No signs of a lighting strike.
