Vines and leaves

Two questions:

1. I have a hilly parcel in Monroe County with about 30 nice white oaks and a lot vines growing up the sides of them. Would it help the health/growth of the oaks if I cut the vines off at the ground (and remove say 3 ft of the vine?)

2. In Marion County I have a parcel with about 75 oaks. A logger came out to look at them and said they were Post Oaks. I have a tree guide that shows leaf shapes, and clearly the leaves do not match Post Oak leaves per the book?? They look like White Oaks. (By the way, this parcel is flat and wet.)

Shawn,

Regarding vine management on crop trees, I'm an advocate of removing grape vines and poison ivy vines from my high quality timber trees. The vines add a tremendous amount of weight to the crown and branches, thus increasing the probability of crown and branch breakage. Simply sever the vines at ground level at treat the vine (ground end) with herbicide such as Pathway, Garlon, etc.

As we discussed earlier in a phone conversation, if the terrain is flat, wet, with heavy clay, there are good odds that you may have a number of post oak (Quercus stellata) trees.
