I have a farm that about 40yrs ago a conservation program came in and planted about 20 ac of pines. These trees are about 25-30ft tall and about 16 in in diameter. Do they have any value for harvest? Who would I contact to see about harvest? Thank you

Greetings Phil:

Even though high-value hardwoods rule the roost here in Illinois, there is a modest market for coniferous species (log cabin logs, pulpwood, dimensional lumber, utility poles, fuelwood, mulch, etc.). Therefore, I strongly encourage you to contact a local professional consulting forester to determine the feasibility and logistics of conducting a commercial timber sale within this stand of white pine.

Have approximately 150 white pines about 50 yrs old and 50 to 60 ft tall. Some with a base of over 2 foot. Most are straight as an arrow, and bigger than most power poles. Looking for a harvester to thin them out. Not take all.

Greg, I would recommend contacting your local IDNR district forester (https://extension.illinois.edu/sites/default/files/idnr_district_foresters_20211004.pdf) or a local consulting forester (https://storymaps.arcgis.com/stories/82f6f4f3de1f45e79633ba493f861ebf) to determine the market for pine in your region. Some regions in Illinois have a bit of a market and in other regions landowners struggle to find buyers for pine.
