Establishing Timber Value

Hi there! I am about to move forward on a timber contract on my 40 acres in MI, and I'm really confused on how they estimate value. I have 40 acres full of 75-100 year old white oaks, maples, and pine. Mostly white oak though. This land has not been harvested since the late 1800's early 1900's.

Hi Lisa:

Timber values can be estimated quite easily by getting a professional consulting forester involved. It makes very little sense to cut your trees and then value them; rather, it makes much more sense to have prior knowledge of your timber's value before any trees are harvested.

In fact, you should contact a professional consulting forester to assist you in the marketing, sale, and administration of your standing timber as you'll make more money and harvest fewer trees!
