I just got a quote from a logging company for some walnut trees on my property I was quoted 3000 for 16 walnuts and one white oak I feel this is an extremely low offer they are saying they came up with only 1700 board feet does this sound anywhere close to what it should be? my property is mostly steep hill but at least 4 of the walnut trees are in my yard not the timber

Hi Ryan:

Okay, let's do some quick math:

$3,000 for 17 trees = $176 / tree 1,700 bf for 17 trees = 100 bf / tree They are offering $1.76 / bf

Either the board feet estimate is significantly off, or they're wanting to harvest extremely small trees, or the trees are very short and squatty.

I would strongly encourage you to get in contact with a professional consulting forester for on-site technical assistance regarding these 16 walnut trees.

Best of luck!

First of all thank you for your quick response. How much does a board foot of walnut go for. Just on average how much would be a fair amount? The trees are nowhere near small or short and stubby. They are actually some really nice looking trees.

Hi Ryan:

My pleasure! Please refer to the IL Timber Prices Bulletin to gauge timber prices (stumpage and FOB). The board foot price for walnut can vary greatly due to size, quality, texture (# growth rings per inch), sapwood thickness, color, log length, etc.
