I have several seedlings started in plastic pots. How can I protect them during the winter months until they are planted next fall?

Hi Brenda:

I would strongly encourage you to get your seedlings planted and growing outside as quickly as possible since it's only mid-June with plenty of growing degree days still left!

However, if circumstances do not allow for outplanting at this time, then overwintering your seedlings in “oversized” planting containers placed in your garage, shed/outbuilding, or enclosed porch, should provide adequate shelter. The important thing is to avoid desiccation whereby the stem and root system dries out. Water the pots occasionally if winter weather is dry or you notice the planting media becoming too dry, preferably when temperatures are above freezing.

Best of luck!
