Lightning is electricity that moves through the air during a thunderstorm. It lasts less than a second, but it can still heat the air to over 50,000 degrees Fahrenheit. Lightning does not go in a straight line because it follows the path of least resistance through the air. Lightning can go from cloud to ground, cloud to cloud, and has even been seen shooting out of the tops of thunderstorms!
