Hurricanes

Movie: NOAA

A hurricane is one of nature’s biggest storms. It is a huge, swirling body of air hundreds of miles wide, with strong winds and rain.

Hurricanes form over warm tropical oceans. They use moisture gathered from the ocean to build into a storm with winds ranging from 75 to almost 200 miles per hour. As long as they are over warm waters, they will continue to produce wind and rain. Once they reach land, or move into cooler water, they shut down very quickly.
