Hefty Heat Engines

Movie: NOAA

Hurricanes are known as heat engines, because they move heat from the warm earth surface to other parts of the atmosphere. As they move away from tropical areas, they also release heat into cooler parts of the earth. This helps transfer heat from warm areas of the earth to areas that don’t have as much heat.
