In the center of the hurricane, there is an area where there is almost no wind, no rain, and you can see blue sky (or stars at night)! This is called the eye of the hurricane. The eye is only a few miles wide. When the eye travels over an area, someone will experience calm weather only as long as the eye is present. Strong winds and rain will return once the eye is past.
Besides strong wind and heavy rain, another threat from a hurricane is something called a storm surge. This is a large mass of water that is pushed along by a hurricane onto land. A storm surge can be up to 15 feet tall. In some cases, it causes more damage than wind and rain.
