Flooding can occur anywhere water is allowed to flow across the land surface. Normally, most flooding is found next to streams, but it can also happen in areas that would not normally be considered a flood zone.

Moving water is very powerful. More than half of all flood-related deaths happen when vehicles are swept off roads. The faster water flows the more it can carry. Six inches of fast-flowing water can knock a person off his feet.
