I have a Rose of Sharon That is 7Ft tall. it blooms beautifully. It is without stems on bottom section Approx. 4Ft. this is the way i want it I now hae three new plants that i purchased late last season. They are growing with many outgrowths from the bottom . can i trim the bottom growth to incourage a more tree like plant?

Hello:

Yes, you can trim up the lower branches a few at a time, removing no more than about 30% of the canopy at any one time. As the upper canopy grows in size, you can continue to remove more lower branches. Doing this slowly will not cause a shock to the plant, which could throw it out of flower production.

As the lower portions of the trunk get woodier, the less sprouting will occur.

Good Luck!
