Yes, you can trim up the lower branches a few at a time, removing no more than about 30% of the canopy at any one time. As the upper canopy grows in size, you can continue to remove more lower branches. Doing this slowly will not cause a shock to the plant, which could throw it out of flower production.
As the lower portions of the trunk get woodier, the less sprouting will occur.
