I planted tomatoes in large flower pots this year. The first two tomoates that had turned red had tan color circles on the bottom on the tomatoes, about the size of a nickle. I noticed a couple of the green ones had this on them to. Can you tell me what this is and what I can do about it. Thankyou Panda

Hi Panda

This sounds like it could be the early stage of blossom end rot, which is common on tomatoes, especially those grown in containers. Blossom end rot is the break down of the tissues on the bottom of the tomato, due to a lack of calcium. The way to correct this is to have very good watering practices. If the water supply to the tomato is consistent, so will the supply of calcium. Containers need to be watered frequently in hot weather and at some point, your tomatoes probably just were not getting enough water. Water often enough so that the soil does not dry out. With containers this may be every day.
