I am not sure what really happened to your sod, but if you have no rooting after this much time has elapsed, I doubt that the sod will root at all. The watering routine you used seems fine. The soil should have been prepared before the sod went down. If that was not done, I could see where you might have limited rooting. It might also be possible that you did not receive quality sod (especially if you were pulling up weeds). I would consider re-sodding, with the proper soil prep ahead of time, since it seems that this lawn has doen nothing but struggle to survive. As for using a grub preventer, I doubt that you need to since there are no roots for grubs to eat, unless you know for sure that you have a grub problem and they might be the reason you have no roots.
