deformed melons

what could be causing about half of my watermelons to be deformed ? I have about 1000 hills of crimson sweets and all sweets.Both varieties are deformed.I kept the weeds down with a hoe and cultivator. no chemicals were used for weed control.I sprayed once for bugs before the plants set blossoms.Its been over ten years since this ground has been farmed.
