Magnolia scales

Being without a job, I used my garden hose to manually remove much of these scales (July-Aug 1st week).

However the question I have is how do these scales start in the first place. I have a magnolia that is about 25 feet tall and is about 15 years old. This is the first time I have seen these scales. So, how did these scales get here?

TIA.

Hi Niranjan

Although the adult scale is immobile, the young ones, called crawlers can move around. They are small, like mites and can be moved around by wind, by birds going from tree to tree or even by the gardener working on an infested tree and then going to work on an uninfested tree.
