Hello Al: If the wild roses are multiflora rose, they can be very difficult to get rid of. Research in the midwest suggests that repeated mowing or cane removal by pruning 3-4 times a season will kill multiflora rose. This may take 2-4 years, depending on the maturity of the plants. You should contact your local Authorities to find out if Multiflora Rose is considered an invasive plant and if so you may have additional remedies to consider. You can also contact your local county extension office for assistance in indentifying the rose and get local recommendations on control. A round-up type of product is often used to treat the cut stubs after being mowed or pruned. Good luck and good hunting. Sincerely, Richard Hentschel
