I missed the spring pruning and the lilacs did poorly. Is it advisable to prune them now (no frost yet) on 10/31 or wait till after next spring's lackluster bloom? thanks!

Dear Patricia, If you prune now you will be removing next spring bloom. Since buds are set up the season before, your poor bloom show may not repeat itself, depending on the growing season you had. Consider feeding your lilac this coming season to be sure the plant has all the food it needs for both vegetative and reproductive growth and a better bloom show should be the result.
