Rabbits eating saplings

What is the best way to keep rabbits from chewing saplings in half? Right now I have all of the young trees protected with wire fencing. Looking for something less noticeable, more aesthetically pleasing.

Dear Kyle, You are using the most practical and fool proof protection right now as unattractive as it seems. There are plastic wraps that are available commercially that twist around the trunk for protection. The trunk will need to be clear (without branches) for 18-24 inches. They are usually grey in color. The wraps should be removed during the summer months to allow the trunk to develop properly. There are also rabbit and deer repellants made up of hot peppers that you spray on the plant that gives a very hot taste if chewed on. These materials often times will need to be reapplied in early spring to ensure protection till the grasses and other plants become available as a food source. Whatever system you use, remember that they are only as effective as the snow is deep. Take heart knowing that Arboretums resort to wire fencing to keep rabbits and deer from feeding

Sincerely, Richard
