I was unable to post a reply to the previous question/answer. The following is in response to the pathogen question asked earlier.

The initial response was helpful. I am wondering if you can tell me what the pathogens are that tend to cause problems. I'm curious what they are.

If I am understanding correctly, the pathogens can: a. be in the soil mix b. be in the tools or containers used c. be on on your hands if you've handled things in which the pathogens reside d. get into any cuts/wounds on the petiole/leaf blade e. be transferred easily through water

Since AVs are often propagated by cutting both the petiole and the top third of the leaf, these are obviously places pathogens can enter. Does it make any sense to use something like Neem or a fungicide when potting to ensure that you've killed anything that might be present? Or is that frivolous use?

Most soil-less mixes contain peat, in which I assume the pathogens could reside. Perlite and sphagnum moss are two items I can think of that should be sterile. Are there others that could be used?

Dear Ann,

Phytophthora, Pythium and Rhizoctonia are commonly associated with African Violets. Rhizoctonia being the main one when you are propagating. The best conditions for their growth is also the best condition for rooting. Sanitation is the best way to avoid contamination. One point I missed earlier is that you could also take a cutting from an already contaminated plant that shows no symptomology.

Besides Perlite and Peatmoss, Vermiculite should also be sterile. In order for a fungicide to work, the pathogen needs to be already growing, something you are wanting to avoid to start with, so applications should be that last resort.

Sincerely, Richard Hentschel
