Wintering Red Banana

My red banana treet Ensete Maurelii is 8 feet tall. I brought in the house for winter, but it just keeps growing. It is taking over the dining room. Can I cut it off all the way to the bottom and keep in a cool basement area? Thanks for the helps

Hello Jerry:

Yes, you can cut your banana plant down to about a foot from the pot. Bananas have a growing point somewhere below that that should not be cut off. Let the pot dry down so the soil is not too wet before you do this. Place the pot as you noted in a cool, dark location until next spring when you return it upstairs to start to grow and later taking it back out doors.
