Hello Doug, Unless you chose an upright growing shrub, most shrubs will grow wider as they grow taller. Shrubs will commonly be at least as wide as they are tall and ofen times wider, 6-8 feet and more is typical. Consider other attributes such as leaf texture, spring flowers and late summer fruit, fall color and winter interest (branch structure and or persistant fruit through the winter) in your choices. Please contact your local Extension Office or visit a reliable nursery or garden center for the best choices for your area. You will have plants to consider that I do not have knowledge of here in the midwest.
Sincerely, Richard Hentschel
