protection from sidewalk contruction

Over 20 years ago I planted a row of 1gal Arbovitae. They are now about 15-20ft tall and very healthy. The Village will be installing sidewalks and coming into my property line by about 1ft. and therefore very close to the roots of my shrubs. They claim they will do 'root pruning'. Is there a way that I can better protect them? And how 'close' is 'too close' for survival?

Dear Pam:

Anytime roots are lost, a lose of water into the canopy will happen. Be sure the plants are well watered just before the sidewalk construction and immediately afterwards. the farther the root pruning cuts are from the trunk the less impact. Next season plan on feeding the evergreens and be sure to keep up with the water next season at least so the plants can rebuild the roots on the affected side.

Hope this is helpful,

Richard
