I recently found out Japanese barberry is an invasive species. I have two red and two yellow barberries planted ten years ago. Are there any safe varieties to plant? Is there any chance mine may not be Japanese? Thank you so much for helping me. Also, is it true burning bushes may be invasive as well?

Depending on what part of the country you live in, different plants are more invasive than others. If your barberries have not begun to "take over' in your landscape, I suspect you are fine. Plants can become aggressive if they easily grow from seed or spread by underground roots. Burning bush have been put on invasive lists out east for example. Many groups adopt another states list of aggressive plants and that does not guarantee they are so here in Illinois. With that said, there are plants in N. Illinois that behave themselves, yet are aggressive in S. Illinois. There are list from Arboretums, wildlife organization, the Northeast Illinois Invasive plant organization and others that can provide alternative plants those they feel are invasive. The actual list of plants that are illegal to sell in Illinois is very short.
