What number can I call to ask an expert on tree roots affecting concrete? I've asked a city arborist, the botanic garden , and Morton Arboretum info line, and no one I can reach seems to know. You folks are the ultimate experts, so please help! Thank you

Hello Bev: A tree that naturally has a more shallow root system has the potential to disturb concreate driveways and sidewalks. Newer concrete inslallations can have a better gravel base than other concrete installations and can do a better job of discouraging root growth underneath as the roots prefer soil over compacted rocks. Trees planted immediately next to concrete can crack and raise the the concrete due to crown of the tree growing in size and doing so slowly but with great force. Tree roots growing under sidewalk are more likely to raise up the concrete since they can more readily grow all the way to the ohter side and back into good soil. This is all species dependent with faster growing trees having more potential for damage. I hope this information is helpful
