What is the best way to prevent pests in the soil from being brought inside in tropical plants?

Many of the soil pests that find their way into our houseplants while outdoors for the summer become a nuisance indoors. These insects prefer a moist, high humidly environment to live in and only consume decaying organic matter or other insects. Because the home is a much hotter and drier environment, these insects are often found dead on the window sill or plant shelf. Prior to bringing in the plants you can flush the pot with lots of water and that will drive the insects out of the pot.
