When I set my indoor potted spider plant outside on the patio, I have recently noticed a red vertical line in the center of the leaves; plant appears healthy. What could be the cause of the mysterious red color?

No sure what this exactly is. When plants transition from inside conditions to outside, it's usually best to move them to a partiallly shaded location. Moving them into full sun is usually too intense. I'm guessing this is a reaction to the sunlight. If the plant appears healthy then it shouldn't be a problem. But consider keeping it in slightly more shade when out-of-doors.
