Our school garden has vegetable (particularly tomatoes) that we grow organically all season. It appears that someone has sprayed a herbicide in the area near the vegetables. I don't know which product was used. What do you know about whether there is a harmful effect to humans from weedkillers that get on foods that are consumed? Is it safe if the foods are thoroughly washed prior to consumption?

Unless the product was labeled for vegetables, any of the produce should not be consumed. For products that are labeled, the label needs to be read to determine waiting time before harvest. And we always recommend produce be washed prior to using.
