In your answer about killing creeping charlie with the 3 ingredient lawn weed killer.

I have the Bayer crab grass and weed killer with dicambia and 2 4D. Will this product harm my white pine trees? They are 12 to 15 years old.

It is the Dicamba in the product that could cause a problem, but not if applied at the correct rate and while the pines are hydrated. I would consider making sure the pines are well watered so there is only a remote chance they might take up your correctly diluted spay mixture. The crabgrass component would not harm the piine at all as it is active against grasses, not broad leaf weeds. There are always exceptions, so please read the label carefully and follow the directions. If the lable states damage is possible, you have to believe the label.

So, dicamba is the boogeyman in the mix for getting rid of Creeping Charlie.

Is there another solution that would kill charlie without affecting the trees?

Would watering heavily the day before application help?

Would having a lawn service like Golf Green or Tru Green be advisable?

Charlie is very heavy under the pines.

Yes, a lawn care management company may be able to apply the same 3 product mix (or equivalent) with more accuracy and uniformity than you can. If you go that route, ask what assurances they can provide that their applications will not harm ;your pines. If the pines are harmed, what kind of resolution would be offered.

Creeping Charlie is a hard weed to manage. The 2,4D component alone will not control CC, the second ingredient Mecoprop (MCPP) is more effective, but still does not adequately control CC. It is the Dicamba that will finish it off. For that reason there is very little Dicamba in the mix as the first two have already stressed the CC.

If it is 100% CC under the pines and very little grass, you might consider a non selective herbicide (glyphosate) to control the CC and then use the 3 product mix out in the lawn itself.

I mentioned heavy watering so the pines would not take up any or very little water containing the Dicamba after spraying, limiting any damage.

Results: Used Roundup under the pine trees. Took care of the very heavy Creeping Charlie. Did have some damage to surrounding grass but spring planting will fix. Used Spectracide crabgrass and weed killer in the law. Added benefit was the elimination of other broadleaves without killing the grass. Since the spring I have been patching grass and using the spectracide on remaining lawn based charlie. Thank you for your help is this matter.
