Burning Bush are typically pruned in the early spring using the heading back method. Burning Bush do not respond well to deep cuts into the canopy as the old wood does not readily create new buds. Heading back cuts are made by cutting back into the canopy to a smaller branch or an existing bud. If you attempt to cut a 6 foot Burning Bush down to a 4 foot height, you will be left with stumps that may never generate new growth while others may.
As a foundation plant (if this is the case) they have a useful lifespan of about 12 or so years before they are just too large for the location in your landscape design
