Roots

There are four trees in the southeast corner outside my 6-flat condo building, which was built in 1931. In the last few years, we had to replace sewer pipes that had broken partly from tree roots. Roots also broke through the cement floor of a garage. Some owners are saying the trees need to be cut down. Do we have alternatives? Is there a way to save the trees and protect our building? Thank you.

This reply is in addition to your earlier questions.

You should determine the kind of trees. some have more shallow roots than others.

If the trees are compromised in some way, then removal may be a consideration. I would also consider the use of a structural engineer to determine the integrity of the foundation.
