Pruning Ninebark

Hello, I recently purchased ninebark bushes that are a good four feet tall but were very root bound and have mostly spindly weak stems. Can I cut the whole plant to the ground this fall to rejuvenate?

First, be sure you really break up the root ball when you plant them. Normally we do this kind of pruning when the plants have been established. You are asking the plant to both grow roots into the soil and also create new buds from the crown for new growth next spring. You might consider waiting until the fall of 2015 to be sure the plants establish themselves before you renovate them by pruning to the soil line

Thank you! I will let them get settled in and see what kind of growth they put out in the spring. I'm hoping it will be robust now that they are out of their pots.
