I am interested in planting about 10 pecan trees and 10 hazelnut trees. I would like to get nuts as fast as possible and thought I would buy a tree in a small container like you would buy at Rural King or Home Depot. They do not seem to carry these types of trees.

Where would you suggest I buy trees like this in Southern Illinois and is there any planting or care methods that will result in quicker production of nuts.

Thanks for any advise you can provide.

Most likely you will need to go to a mail-order source for the trees i.e. Stark Bros, to name one. For the pecan, you will need 2 different varieties for best cross pollination. For best production, choose grafted varieties vs seedling types since they are more predictable in bearing. There really is no fast way to production. If the soil is fairly fertile, no additional fertilizer is needed. But in an average soil, it is recommended to fertilizer with 1# per inch trunk diameter (trees less than 6" diam) in spring.

A couple of suppliers would be: Forrest Keeling http://www.fknursery.com/ Start Bros http://www.starkbros.com/ growers.

They can help you with your selection process.
