I have a large Red Oak tree. This spring we notice that the leaves were deformed, with most leaves rounded off unevenly, missing their characteristic points. This is all the way up the tree. This fall we are noticing that parts of the leaves have turned a dark brown, some falling off. The rest of the leaf is a nice green (too early for autumn leaf dying). Also, a few leaves have tiny light brown spots. These symptoms do not appear on our other Oak trees (Pin Oak and Burr Oak). I can send photos but this posting has not place to attach them. Thanks for your help.

Since this condition has been around since spring, I would consider Oak Anthracnose. this occurs in the spring of the year when conditions are right and disfigures the leaves. Every oak being a genetic cross has different susceptibility. Treatments can be done in the spring if the disease continues to appear annually. This link will provide more detailed information on the disease on shade trees: http://ipm.illinois.edu/diseases/series600/rpd621/

typical treatments occur at bud break and again when foliage is half grown. There are systemic fungicides that may be available if the tree is large. Consult a certified Arborist for treatment options.
