We have a 'Rainbow Pillar" serviceberry that has been in our yard for two years. I just noticed some of the bark, low on the trunk, is injured. I am guessing it might be rabbits, but it could also be deer. Should I do something to protect it? Will this kill a young tree? Thank you!

You should trace back any damage to the edge of the wound to promote healing. Assuming this is a multiple stem specimen, using rabbit fencing which has smaller spacing near the bottom and larger spacing farther up to keep rabbits out this winter should be considered. Deer damage is typically higher in the plant. if the damage is extensive, then individual branches may fail. Serviceberry have a great ability to send new shoots from the crown so all is not lost.
