Hi - I was looking at some arbor vitae that are on season clearance at a store near us. They are about 4 ft tall and in root balls for 1/2 price, but they are brown on the inside and near the bottoms. The outsides are all green. Is this normal for trees that have been on a store lot all summer long or should i pass on buying this "bargain"?

There will always be an area inside that is brown, that is normal. Near the bottom may be a bit more of a concern. This may be just due to being there all summer in the yard and new and future growth will cover what is now brown along the bottom. You have more time for transplanting and recovery than here in N. Illinois. If they have been well cared for this summer and you are willing gamble a bit, go ahead, especially if there is a warranty involved.

I have 7-yeast old arborvitae that have become brown at the bottom. They are on the north side of a wooden fence, which may account for the brown bottoms but it is a problem only recently. Any idea what might be happening an dhow it might e addressed?
