Can established asparagus plants be dug up and transplanted. If so when is the best time of year to do it? I have discovered a small patch in a field near an abandoned farmstead that is adjacent to our farm.

It's usually pretty difficult to dig up an established asparagus planting because the roots systems are so deep. Also, if it's been there a long time, chances are it's an older cultivar. Our general recommendation is to establish a new planting with new crowns. There are many new cultivars available - especially those referred to as male cultivars - Jersey Knight, Jersey Prince, Jersey Centennial. While it is possible to dig them up, it isn't usually feasible.
