ground cover

I would like a suggestion for a soil erosion ground cover. I live on a lake and this area has a steep slope going down to rip-rap that extends into the water. This area is in direct sun and the soil is dry clay. I was wondering if English ivy would have a deep enough root system to hold the soil? Would lily of the valley be an option. Thinking of what plants I have available since this is a large area to protect. Thank you for any suggestions,

Daylillies are often used for this purpose. Ivy may cover the ground, yet the root system is not likely to hold the soil beneath. Lily of the Valley could easily escape and be troublesome later.
