Planting near walnut tree

i planted a vanderwolf pine in June of 2013, it has turned very brown, I took pictures and talked to a person at the nursery where I bought it, she wanted to give it another year before replacing it. I just returned from the nursery with a replacement. I mentioned that I had the vanderwolf planted near a walnut tree, she thought that may be the problem. Now I'm wondering if I should find a spot farther away from the walnut tree.

A walnut being slow growing produces a chemical called juglone that inhibits other plants that could become competitive as a defense mechanism. the closer you get to the trunk the more inhibitive the juglone. At the edge of or past the drip line the amount is far less. If you have a location suitable for the pine elsewhere, that would take the worry away.
