pink bee balms

I plant red bee balms and they come back next year pink. I want red but they vanish the second year. Why are they pink?

It is unusual for monarda to revert, especially repeatedly. The only way I can think of where this happens is if they form seeds. The resulting seedlings would not be true-to-type.
