River Birch

We have a River Birch about 8 years old. It's never been a thriving tree, but just recently we've had larger branches on the top break off for no reason. First one branch, then a couple days to a week later, another one, until the top of the tree looks very bad. What is causing the breakage and what can be done about saving the tree? It's not attributed to wind or storms.

Thanks!

River Birches are known for breaking up during storms, rain and ice events. If the tree has not be well for some time, suggest looking for borer activity in the areas where the branches have come down. Here in Illinois, raccoon's will climb and get to branches that cannot support them and cause breakage. if no cause is found, plan on watering well this fall until it is time to put the hose away and fertilize and water the the tree in the spring to assist in recovery. You should also contact your local Extension office for a more local response to your concern.
