My extension office was not sure what type of grass is growing in my lawn. While mowing in September I noticed the grass was not being cut evenly. I raked the grass and notice it was long and thin like spaghetti and it was laying flat. I thought the grass would recover once I mowed it lower. There are a lot of sections in my yard where the grass just pulls up, like there is no roots to hold it in the ground. It appeared that my grass was only one color of green. I checked under the grasses that I pulled up and no grubs. I also gave the lawn a grub treatment this summer.

From your description, it sounds like you have Nimblewill (Muhlenbergia schreberi), a warm season perennial grass. Nimblewill will root along those stringy stems as it creeps through the more desirable lawn grasses. Nimblewill prefers moist soil and shady locations. It is late in turning green in the Spring and goes dormant early in the fall.
