Red Twig Dogwood

Hello

I have about 20 red twigs that I planted 3 and 4 years ago as saplings. Most still have only a single stem. I am wondering how old they should be before they are pruned. Will they develop multiple stems on their own or do I need to prune them to force that to happen? I can't find anything that advises on how old the shrubs might be before they are pruned initially.

Thank you! Felicia

You can prune red twig dogwoods down to about 3/4 to an inch above the ground to encourage shoots from the root system and bud breaks off the cut stems. Do this in early spring while the plants are still dormant.
