Red twig dogwood

Are there different cultivars of red twig dogwood? I am wanting to plant several compact varieties of these shrubs, but I am concerned that at my cabin there is as variety that snakes along the ground, seems to spread by underground roots and is not pretty at all. I have seen some that seem to maintain a more compact, upright appearance. Is this just do to diligent pruning or are there different varietes? I am in zones 3-4. Thanks.

Yes there are many cultivars of red twig dogwood. The smallest ones I know of that maintains the bright red twigs are Cornus sericea "Isanti' and" Kelseyi".

Older larger forms can be kept smaller by using the renewal pruning technique every year or complete renovation every 3-5 years.
