Window well

A Pear less tree is growing in my egress window well. It jumped over from a tree in the front yard. How can I get rid of this tree which is now 4 feet tall (very thin). Some roots are above the ground in the well.

Also, how can I cover the well without spending a fortune?

The best way is to physically cut the tree back to the ground level. It will probably resprout which means you'll need to keep cutting with the idea that you'll eventually starve it out. There are brush killers that can be used on the cut 'stump' if you prefer to go that route. There are a variety of wndow well covers that are sold at home/building supply stores - some as inexpensive as plastic. It comes down to how much do you want to spend and how long do you want it to last.
