Emerald green growth

We planted several emerald green arborvitae this year and I was wondering about how long does it take them to start widening out. They seem very thin from what I've seen with fully grown ones. They are all 8 foot tall ones that we had planted. I hope they grow vertically as well but they really need to widen to cover up the spaces in between them. They were planted 3 feet apart.

It normally takes about 1 year of recovery for every inch of trunk diameter measured a couple inches above the soil line. Once the plants establish themselves and begin to grow you can expect 6- inches of growth annually
