I have a number of large spruce trees that seem to be dying. I notice other similar trees in the area doing the same thing. Any suggestions as to cause and what can be done? Thanks much

Large spruce (and pine) have been stressed since the drought of 2012. Needle blight and needle cast fungal diseases have been the main cause of recent continued decline. Watering when we have dry spells and not waiting until drought conditions will keep them hydrated. Spring fertilizing will also help. Tree care companies can be used to make appropriate treatments once the specific fungal disease has been identified. Treatments are often done for at least two years with more than one treatment a season being needed. Depending on the disease, removal of the fallen needles and any cones will reduce the disease pressure.
