what I thought to be a perennial gloxinia may not be---it puts out large long leaves in spring but they eventually die and the flowers appear later in summer- the picture of a perennial gloxinia in my book does not look like what I have-any ideas?

The description is much too vague to make any identification. The only plant that comes to mind based on your description is Lycoris. It puts out large strappy leaves that die off, followed by a tall stem with large pink lily-like flowers. You would need to send a photo of the flowers to determine exactly what you have. A local garden center might be able to determine what the plant is if it's something common to your state since it may be something we don't grow in the midwest.
