Woke up this weekend to a huge Bradford Pear limb in the yard. It left quite a large place on the main trunk open. Is the tree lost? I could send a photo but I don't know if there is a place to do that.

Hello: I can share that Bradford pears are very prone to this kind of damage as they mature and the branches get heavier with leaves. The acute crotch angles create included bark in the bark ridge area that weakens the crotch. A strong wind, a rain storm, etc. can cause the split. If you look there are other branches in a similar state. Remove the branch leaving the wound as smooth as possible to encourage callus growth. A wound the size you have is not likely to every complete heal over.
